There is something fascinating about journeys that begin without a fixed destination.
In life, we are often encouraged to plan meticulously, define goals, create roadmaps, and anticipate outcomes. While planning undoubtedly has its place, some of the most memorable experiences emerge when we leave room for spontaneity.
Our thirteenth edition of #EnrouteToRoots had already taken us through chapters of roots and relationships. The third chapter unfolded around a theme that is equally important, yet often overlooked:
Discovery.
We left Darbhanga with no clear destination in mind, heading east through Bihar toward the famous Chicken's Neck - the narrow corridor that connects mainland India to the Northeast.
As the miles passed beneath our wheels, the world around us began to transform.
The landscape changed.
The language changed.
The food changed.
The rhythm of life changed.
Every turn seemed to introduce us to a new perspective, reminding us of the incredible diversity that exists within our country.
Finding Magic in the Unexpected
What was intended to be a simple overnight stop became one of the most meaningful experiences of the journey.
We found ourselves at a quiet homestay nestled amidst lush tea gardens.
It wasn't luxury that made the experience memorable.
It was the people.
Our host welcomed us not only into his property but into his world. He shared stories, local insights, experiences, and conversations that transformed a routine stopover into a rich cultural exchange.
Meanwhile, my boys immersed themselves in simple joys that seem increasingly rare in today's digital age.
They ran freely through the tea gardens.
Played with Abbey, the family dog.
Chased chickens, piglets, puppies, and explored the surroundings with endless curiosity.
There were no screens.
No schedules.
No distractions.
Just discovery.
And perhaps that is where some of life's greatest learning resides.
What Travel Teaches About Leadership
As I watched these moments unfold, I found myself reflecting on leadership.
In our professional lives, we are trained to:
- Plan carefully
- Forecast outcomes
- Minimize uncertainty
- Control variables
- Manage risks
These are important skills.
But leadership is not only about control.
It is also about openness.
The willingness to embrace the unexpected.
The ability to learn from unfamiliar situations.
