A journey through Bihar that revealed how relationships, memories, and belonging often become life's most meaningful destinations.
Discovering the enduring power of connection, belonging, and the stories that shape who we are.
Some journeys begin with a destination.
Others begin with curiosity.
And occasionally, the most meaningful journeys are the ones where the road quietly decides where you need to go next.
Our second day on the road took us deep into Bihar - a state I had often travelled through but never truly explored. With no fixed itinerary and no pressing timeline, we allowed the journey to unfold naturally, following roads, milestones, and unexpected opportunities.
There is something liberating about travelling without a predetermined destination.
It creates space for surprise.
It invites spontaneity.
And often, it rewards you with experiences that no travel guide could have planned.
Crossing More Than Geographic Borders
As we drove through towns and villages, I became aware of how subtly landscapes can change while carrying entirely different identities.
The transition from eastern Uttar Pradesh into Bihar felt almost invisible on a map, yet profoundly noticeable in experience.
The dialects shifted.
The food evolved.
The cultural nuances became apparent.
The rhythms of daily life felt distinct.
It reminded me that places, much like people, carry their own stories, traditions, and character.
Every region teaches us something unique about resilience, community, and identity.
Perhaps that is one of the greatest gifts of travel - it expands our understanding of the many ways people create meaning and belonging in their lives.
A Reunion Three Decades in the Making
While planning our next halt, I remembered a school friend from my Shillong days whose family lived in Darbhanga.
What began as a casual thought quickly became a phone call.
And that phone call led to something extraordinary.
Thirty-three years after we had last met, my family and I found ourselves standing at their doorstep.
Some relationships seem untouched by time.
The years disappear.
The conversations resume.
The warmth remains.
In fact, it often grows stronger.
What followed was not simply a visit. It was an immersion into memories, stories, and shared history.
Over dinner, breakfast, and countless conversations, my children were introduced to a version of their mother they had never known.
A younger version.
A student.
A dreamer.
A girl navigating school corridors and college experiences long before she became their mother.
There was something magical about watching those stories come alive through the eyes of someone who had witnessed them firsthand.
The Difference Between Networks and Relationships
We live in an era that places enormous value on networking.
We are encouraged to build contacts, expand circles, and increase connections.
While there is value in professional networks, this journey reminded me of something even more important.
Connections are created in moments.
Relationships are nurtured over a lifetime.
Relationships require time.
They require presence.
They require shared experiences, mutual care, and genuine investment in one another's lives.
Unlike networks, relationships are not transactional.
They are transformational.
They shape us, support us, and often carry us through life's most significant moments.
The warmth we experienced in Darbhanga was not the result of recent interaction. It was the result of years of shared history and human connection.
And that is a form of wealth that cannot be measured.
The Legacy of Belonging
As parents, we often think about the future we want to create for our children.
We think about education.
Opportunities.
Experiences.
Security.
Yet this journey has prompted me to reflect on a different kind of inheritance.
Perhaps the most valuable gift we can pass on is a sense of belonging.
A connection to people.
A connection to places.
A connection to stories larger than themselves.
When children understand where they come from, they develop a stronger sense of who they are.
They begin to see themselves as part of an ongoing story rather than isolated individuals navigating the world alone.
That understanding creates confidence.
It creates gratitude.
And it creates resilience.
Roots do not hold us back.
They give us the strength to grow.
Leadership Lessons from the Road
Leadership is often associated with strategy, vision, and achievement.
Yet some of the most important leadership lessons emerge through relationships.
Strong leaders understand the value of investing in people.
They know that trust is built over time.
They recognize that meaningful impact comes not from the number of people we know, but from the quality of the relationships we cultivate.
Just as enduring friendships require care and commitment, so do thriving teams, organizations, and communities.
Leadership, at its heart, is about connection.
And connection begins with genuine human relationships.
Following the Next Milestone
As we left Darbhanga, our hearts felt fuller than when we arrived.
Not because we had discovered a famous landmark or checked another destination off a list.
But because we had experienced something far more meaningful.
We had been reminded that relationships endure.
That stories matter.
And that some of life's richest experiences emerge when we allow ourselves to be guided not by plans, but by people.
So we set off once again.
No destination in mind.
Just the next milestone.
And the stories waiting beyond it.
Because sometimes, the road does not simply take us somewhere new.
It brings us back to what matters most.
