En Route to Roots: When People Become the Living DNA of a Brand

Exploring how values, relationships, and authentic leadership transform individuals into lifelong ambassadors of culture and purpose.

A reflection on leadership, culture, and the individuals who carry an organization's values long after their titles change.

As I continue my En Route to Roots journey, travelling across places, memories, and moments, I have come to realize something profound: roots are not always tied to geography.

Sometimes, our roots are found in people.

They are found in relationships that withstand time, in values that remain unchanged through life's transitions, and in individuals who leave an imprint on our personal and professional journeys.

This week, the road led me back to my North-East roots and into conversations that reminded me why people remain at the heart of every meaningful organization.

Reconnecting with Familiar Souls

Some reunions feel like a continuation rather than a beginning.

After more than a decade, I had the opportunity to reconnect with two remarkable women whose journeys intersected with mine during significant chapters of my professional life.

One was Elizabeth "Eli" Nagde, one of the early pioneers who helped shape the customer experience and culture of The Body Shop India.

The other was Indira, someone I had once mentored as she stepped out of the North-East and into Delhi, ready to embrace new opportunities and challenges.

Years had passed.

Organizations had changed.

Careers had evolved.

Yet what stood out most was not what had changed - but what had remained beautifully constant.

Their authenticity.

Their humility.

Their commitment to people.

Their unwavering values.

In a world that changes rapidly, there is something deeply inspiring about individuals who remain anchored in who they are.

The Quiet Power of Culture Carriers

Both Eli and Indira began their professional journeys as store consultants and later became trainers - guiding not only customer experiences but also influencing teams, behaviours, and workplace culture.

Their stories reminded me that culture is rarely shaped by job titles.

It is shaped by people.

The individuals who consistently demonstrate an organization's values become its most authentic ambassadors.

Long after they move on from a role, they continue carrying those values into new environments, new organizations, and new communities.

That influence cannot be measured on a balance sheet, yet it is one of the most powerful forces behind any successful brand.

The Legacy of Purpose

Eli was among the few individuals who had the opportunity to meet Anita Roddick during her visit to India.

For those familiar with The Body Shop's story, Anita Roddick represented much more than entrepreneurial success. She demonstrated that business could be driven by purpose, ethics, community, and courage.

Meeting her was not simply a privilege.

It was a reflection of the qualities Eli herself embodied.

Even today, years later, she continues to live the spirit that made The Body Shop distinctive - selfless, compassionate, and deeply committed to helping others.

Purpose, when genuinely embraced, does not end with a job description.

It becomes part of who we are.

Conversations Beyond Careers

One of the most memorable moments of this journey was not found in a conference room or corporate setting.

It unfolded over a simple mug of green tea.

Sitting in Eli's beautiful self-tended garden, surrounded by nature, five energetic dogs, and a heavily pregnant cat who had yet to receive a name, we spent hours reflecting on life.

We spoke about the past.

The present.

The future.

The lessons learned along the way.

And the people who continue to influence us long after our paths diverge.

These are the conversations that remind us that careers are only one part of our story.

The relationships we build and the values we carry often become our greatest legacy.

Leadership Beyond Visibility

Today's world often celebrates visibility.

We admire scale, influence, reach, and rapid success.

Yet some of the most impactful leaders are not necessarily the most visible.

They lead through consistency.

Through integrity.

Through the quiet choices they make every day.

As leaders, we often search externally for ambassadors, influencers, and advocates who can represent our brands.

Yet the most authentic ambassadors are often already within our organizations.

They are the individuals who live the culture, embrace the values, and carry the organization's purpose forward wherever they go.

True leadership lies in recognizing this potential and nurturing it.

It is about seeing individual value as brand value.

It is about understanding that people are not simply contributors to a business—they are custodians of its culture.

When Brands Become Part of Who We Are

The strongest brands are not merely recognized.

They are remembered.

And perhaps the most powerful brands of all are those that become part of a person's identity.

When values become habits.

When purpose becomes action.

When culture becomes character.

That is when a brand transcends products and services.

It becomes a way of thinking.

A way of behaving.

A way of leading.

As The Body Shop India celebrates an important milestone in its journey, it is worth recognizing that organizations are ultimately built by people like Eli - individuals who quietly strengthen foundations, inspire others, and carry a brand's spirit long after their formal roles evolve.

The Leadership Lesson That Stayed With Me

As I left that evening, one thought remained with me.

In a world that celebrates speed, growth, and visibility, true leadership is often found in consistency.

Consistency of values.

Consistency of intent.

Consistency of impact.

Some people do not simply work for a brand.

They become a living reflection of it.

And perhaps the strongest cultures are not created in boardrooms.

They are carried forward every day by people who choose to live them.

That is the kind of leadership.
