In a world where schedules are packed, screens compete for attention, and learning is often measured by grades and milestones, it is easy to forget that some of life's greatest lessons are learned far beyond the walls of a classroom.
This summer, our family embarked on a journey across Gujarat's coastline - covering over 2,000 kilometres through Mount Abu, Dwarka, Porbandar, Diu, Somnath, Gir, Bhavnagar, Sabarmati, the Statue of Unity, and eventually making our way back home through Ahmedabad and Ajmer.
On the surface, it was a family road trip.
In reality, it became something much more.
It became a classroom without walls.
A journey where roads became teachers, stories became lessons, and experiences became lifelong memories.
Following a Story Older Than Time
One of the most meaningful aspects of this journey was tracing the path associated with Lord Krishna—from the stories of Vrindavan to the sacred city of Dwarka.
Every morning, before the day's adventures began, I would read verses from the Bhagavad Gita to my children.
At six and ten years old, they may not yet fully grasp the philosophical depth of these teachings.
But that wasn't the goal.
The intention was simpler.
To introduce them to timeless ideas about courage, duty, compassion, resilience, and self-awareness.
To help them understand that wisdom is not only found in textbooks but also in stories that have guided generations for centuries.
Sometimes, planting a seed is enough.
Understanding can come later.
Learning Beyond the Classroom
Throughout the journey, learning happened naturally.
There were no worksheets.
No exams.
No structured lesson plans.
Yet every day was filled with discovery.
We read Oliver Twist and The Seagull beneath sprawling banyan trees and during quiet evenings cooled by the sea breeze.
We explored history through places rather than pages.
We walked through temples, reflected on Gandhi's legacy at Sabarmati, stood before the magnificence of Somnath, and witnessed industries that shape livelihoods and communities.
Questions emerged organically.
Conversations became richer.
Curiosity led the way.
This reminded me of something many of us forget as adults:
Children are natural learners.
Given the opportunity, they absorb lessons from the world around them with remarkable openness and enthusiasm.
The world itself is one of the greatest classrooms we will ever encounter.
Reclaiming the Joy of Simple Living
Away from routines and digital distractions, we found ourselves reconnecting with simpler pleasures.
Football games on village roads.
Cycling through unfamiliar paths.
Climbing trees.
Making friends with animals.
Sleeping in tents under vast skies.
These experiences may seem ordinary, yet they offered something increasingly rare in modern life - presence.
When children are free to explore, observe, imagine, and engage with nature, they begin to develop skills that cannot always be taught.
Patience.
Adaptability.
Confidence.
Curiosity.
Gratitude.
The things that matter most are often the things money cannot buy.
Redefining Luxury
One of the most powerful realizations from this journey was how differently luxury can be experienced.
Today, luxury is often associated with convenience, exclusivity, and material comfort.
But somewhere between sea breezes, village roads, and star-filled nights, I found myself redefining what luxury truly means.
Luxury is not always found in five-star hotels.
Sometimes, it is found in uninterrupted conversations with your children.
In watching a sunrise together.
In sharing stories around a campfire.
In having nowhere to be except where you already are.
Luxury is connection.
Connection to family.
Connection to nature.
Connection to values.
Connection to yourself.
The richest moments of the journey required no extravagance at all.
Only attention.
Finding Spirituality in Everyday Experiences
Spirituality is often misunderstood as something distant, abstract, or reserved for sacred spaces.
Yet this journey offered a different perspective.
Spirituality revealed itself not only in temples and pilgrimage sites, but also in people, stories, landscapes, and moments of reflection.
It appeared in the questions my children asked.
In the silence of early mornings.
In the teachings of the Bhagavad Gita.
In conversations about history, purpose, and gratitude.
Spirituality is not always about seeking answers.
Sometimes it is about becoming more present to the questions.
And often, it is about recognizing the interconnectedness of life around us.
Three Lessons Worth Bringing Home
As the journey came to an end, three powerful lessons stayed with me.
1. Learning Is Everywhere
Education is not confined to classrooms.
The world offers endless opportunities to learn if we remain curious enough to notice them.
Every journey, every conversation, and every experience has the potential to teach us something valuable.
2. Luxury Is Connection
True luxury is not measured by comfort or possessions.
It is measured by the quality of our relationships, our experiences, and our ability to be fully present with the people and moments that matter most.
3. Spirituality Is a Way of Seeing
Spirituality is not limited to rituals or places of worship.
It exists in stories, nature, human connections, and everyday experiences—if we choose to see it.
The Journey Continues
Life itself is a journey.
We are all travellers moving from one destination to another, often searching for meaning, growth, and connection along the way.
This road-schooling adventure reminded me that some of the most valuable lessons are not planned.
They emerge unexpectedly through shared experiences, open roads, and moments of presence.
Perhaps the greatest gift we can offer our children is not simply knowledge, but the opportunity to experience life deeply.
To explore.
To question.
To connect.
To wonder.
Because when roads become classrooms and life becomes the teacher, learning never truly ends.
