Many of our biggest challenges aren't solved by talking more- they're solved by seeing differently.
We've all been part of meetings where discussions continue, ideas are shared, and opinions are exchanged, yet the solution remains unclear. Visual thinking offers a different approach by turning abstract ideas into something we can see, explore, and understand together.
Instead of simply explaining thoughts, people build or visualise them, making it easier to identify patterns, uncover assumptions, and develop shared understanding.
Why Visual Thinking Works
Our brains process visual information quickly. When ideas become visible, they become easier to organise, question, and improve.
Visual thinking encourages people to slow down, reflect, and connect ideas that might otherwise remain hidden. It also creates space for everyone to contribute, making conversations more collaborative and inclusive.
Rather than asking, "Who has the answer?" visual thinking encourages teams to ask, "What can we discover together?"
Research Supports This Approach
The importance of visual and creative thinking is increasingly recognised worldwide.
The World Economic Forum's Future of Jobs Report identifies creative thinking, analytical thinking, and problem-solving among the most important skills for the future workforce.
Similarly, insights from the OECD's PISA 2022 assessment highlight the value of visual expression in helping individuals generate, organise, and communicate ideas effectively.
These findings remind us that solving today's complex problems requires more than expertise- it requires new ways of thinking.
Building Better Conversations
One of the reasons I enjoy facilitating Learning Through Creation workshops, using the LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY® methodology, is that every model tells a story.
Each brick can represent an idea, a challenge, or an opportunity. As participants build their thoughts instead of simply describing them, conversations become richer, more inclusive, and more meaningful.
People who may hesitate to speak in a traditional meeting often find confidence through the models they create. Individual perspectives gradually evolve into a shared understanding that teams can align around and act upon.
The goal isn't to build impressive models.
It's to build better conversations.
