Tattoos are a beautiful form of self-expression — there’s definitely no denying that. But, like most things in life, they don’t come without their drawbacks. For instance, many tattoos can fade significantly over time due to factors like sun exposure, smoking, and the type of ink used. And for this reason, some folks may choose to simply remove a tattoo rather than get it redone. As it turns out, this is exactly what Brooke Shields decided to do when a tattoo on her wrist started fading.
The 55-year-old supermodel shared the news this Sunday on Instagram in a photo featuring herself at the dermatologist’s office wearing green goggles. “Starting the removal process on a tattoo that has been fading… Sending a big thank you to @dermdrhale and the whole team for your help!” reads her caption.
Now, Shields didn’t say whether the photo was taken before or after her session, however, if we had to guess, it was likely taken beforehand because ink removal is a famously painful process. In fact, Kelly Osbourne shared her removal experience last fall and said the laser procedure is even more painful than getting inked. Luckily, Shields doesn’t have a huge tattoo, so it should hopefully only take two or three sessions to have it fully removed.
Naturally, the model’s post garnered a slew of comments from curious fans. “You will have to let us know what the level of pain is,” writes one user. “Just curious to know if the removal process is more or less painful than the ink process?🤔” adds another. Additionally, some folks are asking for photos of the tattoo, as well as the finished result.
In regards to how laser tattoo removal works, New York City dermatologist Paul Jarrod Frank previously told Allure: “A high-intensity light beam is targeted at the pigmentation, causing it to break apart, become absorbed into the body, and be excreted through the body’s natural immune system.”
Needless to say, if you have a fading tattoo that you want removed, definitely visit a board-certified dermatologist to determine if it’s the right decision for you.
